22 PART 1 Chapter 1.1 Figure 1 . Potential determinants of health-related behavioral intention to change and actual change in patients with TIA or ischemic stroke based on the Protection Motivation Theory with fear added The Protection Motivation Theory has shown to be an useful model for predicting health- protective intentions and behavior changes in other conditions, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, and breast cancer. [24] We have added fear to this model, because fear is often present after TIA or ischemic stroke and may influence health-related behavior as well. [25, 26] At present, it is unclear if and how the Protection Motivation Theory factors determine the intention to change and actual change in health-related behavior in patients with TIA or ischemic stroke. Insight into determinants of intentions and changes in health- related behavior may be necessary to develop successful health promoting interventions in patients with TIA or ischemic stroke. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to assess determinants of health-related intention to change and actual behavior change in patients with recent TIA or ischemic stroke.
