3 71 Glucose transport and glycolysis We identified three variables of glucose transport which were described in three or more studies: FDG uptake and expression of transporters GLUT1 and 4 ( figure 2 ). The uptake of the glucose-analogue FDGwas uniformly increased in animalmodels 19,31,32 as well as in patients with PH 33 ( figure 2a ). Numerous studies investigated the expression of the major glucose transporters, GLUT1 and GLUT4 and correlated this with FDG- uptake. Our meta-analysis revealed that GLUT1 mRNA as well as protein level was significantly increased in the pressure loaded RV ( figure 2b ).The increase in GLUT1 mRNA expression was universal in all models 15,18,21,27,34-37 , but protein levels
