Note that in this example of the OPT, the  most important goal for this patient was to maintain independence.  Healthcare providers  Patients with cancer often interact with several healthcare providers. After referral to the  hospital, all patients have an attending medical specialist who is responsible for diagnosis  and treatment plan (e.g. a pulmonary oncologist). During both the diagnostic process and  the treatment phase, other medical specialists may be involved (e.g. surgeon, radiotherapist,  medical oncologist). Furthermore, most patients have a case‐manager (e.g. nurse  practitioner) who is the accessible key person during treatment. In the case of specific  patients, other healthcare providers (e.g. dieticians, nurses, physiotherapists) may be  involved.   1 11 General introduction
