The osteophyte formation during joint-preserving treatments with observed endogenous cartilage repair activity seems to be a bystander effect and may be related to a change in intra-articular anabolic factors such as TGF β -1. This observation argues against osteophytosis as solely a key parameter in the joint degenerative process.
