Chapter 9 172 Results The retrieved studies obtained by the literature search are extensively discussed, followed by an exploratory analysis of the KI values retrieved from these studies. Literature search The systematic PubMed search resulted in 205 papers. Papers which contained adult or animal data or were considered as review papers were excluded after abstract and title screening (n=173). Additional studies (n=32) were included by a supplemental search based on relevant references. Studies with missing KI biomarker values (n=13), no pro- or retrospective study design (n=1), ill patient population (n=29), KI biomarker values expressed over creatinine values (n=3), or studies considered as a review paper in pediatrics were excluded (Figure 1). After proof for inclusion criteria (KI biomarkers investigated in heathy (preterm) neonates, children and adolescents (<20 years), no nephrotoxic drugs or therapy with kidney interference, original study, absolute values for investigated KI biomarkers), 12 papers addressed biomarker values for healthy pediatric population (219 preterm neonates and 2392 children/adolescents) and were included in analysis. An overview of all included papers, study population, study design, sample size and assessed KI biomarkers can be observed in Table 2.
