119 Chronosequence analysis of economic performance of agroforestry coffee farms in Colombia 6 Figure 6-1. Map of study area, a) location in Colombia, b) location of study sites (farms) in the Department Risaralda. 6.2.2 Sampling and surveying In April and May 2019, we surveyed 154 coffee producers, hereafter referred to as farmers. A group of 26 farmers owned or managed monoculture coffee plantations (i.e. monoculture farms) and a group 128 farmers owned or managed agroforestry plantations (i.e. agroforestry farms). The agroforestry farms were selected in collaboration with FNC and included those who joined a reforestation project over the last 40 years. Therefore, each agroforestry farm represents a ‘time since transition to agroforestry’, which corresponds to the year they joined the tree planting project. This date was asked to the farmers and verified with FNC, and it was further validated using satellite imagery (De Leijster et al. 2021). In the survey, we emphasized the parcels that were registered as coffee production area, that were productive, and homogeneously managed as either agroforestry or monoculture. In the few cases where farmers managed multiple parcels with a mixture
