200 DANKWOORD AND CREDITS In het najaar van 2017 begon mijn avontuur in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Wat een fantastische tijd heb ik daar mogen meemaken. Tegelijkertijd was het afscheid nemen van dierbaren natuurlijk erg moeilijk. Gelukkig is er dan de Mayo Family waar je in wordt opgenomen. De totstandkoming van dit proefschrift zou dan ook nooit geslaagd zijn zonder de hulp van velen. De hulp en mogelijkheden die ik heb gekregen van zowel mijn Amerikaanse en Nederlandse collega’s geven dit proefschrift voor mij een extra speciaal karakter en is daarmee voor mij een emotioneel slot stuk van een geweldige periode. Want wat een rijkdom is het om zoveel fantastische, getalenteerde, motiverende, en inspirerende mensen om mij heen te hebben. During the very generous welcome dinner at your home we appeared to have a similar interest in flying airplanes. At the Mayo Clinic, you have formed me to become a researcher, a better physician, and to become a private pilot. Above all that, you have been there for me throughout my period in the USA and you are still there for me. You have been not only my mentor, teacher, and boss but also a fantastic friend. Words can hardly express how grateful I am. It has been major honor to work with you. I really look forward to continuing flying with you. Beste Dr. Winters, Dear Hay, You are one of the best reconstructive plastic surgeons in the Netherlands. Therefore, I really look up to you. Since the beginning of my research, we have always shared a common interest in vascularized bone grafts. You are a true example for me of how I want to become a plastic surgeon in the future. Daarom ben ik ook onwijs trots & vereerd dat ik onder uw vleugels mag gaan trainen om een plastische chirurg te worden. Tijdens mijn promotieonderzoek heeft u niet alleen wetenschappelijke kennis en leiding gegeven, maar u heeft mij ook geholpen naar de toekomst te kijken.
