65 Alternatives to conventional autopsy: a systematic review 4 To improve the technical aspects of minimally invasive autopsy methods and to test their potential in larger study groups, including patients who died in hospital with a broad spectrum of diseases, there is a need for more extensive studies. Such studies should not just examine the practical use and accuracy of the alternative autopsy method, but also take into account the cost of implementing the alternative method. If possible, an alternative to conventional autopsy should be developed that is suitable for implementation in academic and non-academic hospitals. Such alternatives to conventional autopsy should ultimately contribute to increasing autopsy rates, improving medical feedback to clinicians, and better overall healthcare quality control.
