General discussion 247 10 This chapter has addressed some of the major challenges of IBS research, such as selecting the appropriate study outcomes and patient population, and employing a more digital and daily-life approach to data-collection. Although this thesis provides new insights in the broader sense of IBS research and treatment, the high prevalence, substantial socioeconomic burden, and impact on quality of life of IBS will continue to necessitate extensive future research into the field of disorders of gut-brain interaction and particularly IBS.
