GENERAL INTRODUCTION | 19 a-days, it is well known that the symptomatology and problems related to ADHD can persist into adulthood (Fayyad et al., 2007; Lara et al., 2009). Problems with decision-making are frequently described in children with ADHD, but are less clearly objectified in adults with ADHD (Groen et al., 2013; Mowinckel et al., 2015). Money management problems are, however, described in adults with ADHD (e.g., Altszuler et al., 2016; Barkley et al., 2006, 2008), but until recently no study was performed using performance-based tests to evaluate FDM capability in adults with ADHD. In chapter 6 a systematic review is presented in which the performances of adults with ADHD on performance-based decision-making tests (including FDM) in comparison with the performances of healthy controls on these tests are evaluated. Within this chapter, the mechanisms underlying problems with decision-making are discussed, which potentially also underly FDM capability problems in adults with ADHD. The study presented in chapter 7 describes the performances of a group of clinically diagnosed adults with ADHD on our FDM test battery compared to a healthy control group. Also, the personal financial situation, such as income and debts, of both groups are compared. In the study presented in the final chapter of the third part, the influence of current symptoms of ADHD on two aspects of FDM (i.e., impulsive buying and the use of specific financial decision styles) is further evaluated in a large community sample. In this study, as presented in chapter 8 , the influence of symptoms of ADHD on these two aspects of FDM is evaluated using both group comparisons and regression analyses. Furthermore, the potential influence of personality traits, symptoms of depression and demographical factors on the relation between symptoms of ADHD and FDM is investigated. To conclude, a critical discussion of the described studies, the FDM test battery and suggestions for the next steps in functional capability and FDM research are described in chapter 9 .
