405 Acknowledgements ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS T he last part of this thesis is dedicated to expressing my appreciation for all those who have contributed to the conduct of my academic endeavors, my professional growth, and personal wellbeing. As this part is often considered “the most read part of the thesis", I should start off with two important thoughts. Firstly, for those who have not (yet!) had the opportunity to read through the previous chapters, this thesis elaborately describes how contemporary doctors are actually still quite comparable to our historical colleagues, who started as botanists. With a lot of teamwork, perseverance, and coffee, we showed how a drug extracted from a plant, growing in your own garden, can be used to treat heart disease. We more-or-less recycled the drug, which was originally used to treat very different maladies. This and other methods of reusing available means may serve as an example of sustainable innovation in medical science. In an era where costs and careers sometimes overshadow actual care, this methods helps us to stay true to our most important mandate: improving patient outcomes. Secondly, the utmost important acknowledgements are due to all the patients who participated in our studies. Their altruistic motives have earned them our deepest respect.We stand in awe of all who put their trust in our clinical experiments. Their willingness to contribute to scientific research humbles us, and their selflessness and confidence is what inspires our work. Having said this, it brings me much joy to thank some others whomade my research possible during the last few years. Aan het einde van de zomer van 2015 heb jij mij een ‘uitstekende propositie’ gedaan die onder meer een ‘kort promotietraject op een rijdende trein’ zou omvatten – een analogie die uiteindelijk vrij goed de prestaties van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen bleek te benaderen. De verlengde duurvan de onderzoekstijd onder jouwsupervisie is echter van zeer grote waarde gebleken.
