73 Review Inflammatory Mediators in Animal Burn Models experimental models. For this, we performed subgroup analyses based on animal species (mouse and rat only), sex, age and detected form (mRNA or protein) (Figure 7). Blood IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α and wound IL-6 levels were all higher in rats compared to mice. In contrast, higher levels of IL-β, IL-10 and TNF-α were found in wound tissue of mouse models over rat models. IL-6 and blood TNF-α were highest in male animals. Differences caused by age could only be assessed for blood levels. Blood IL-1β and TNF-α were higher in young animals than in adult animals. In wound tissue, mRNA and protein levels differed for IL-10 and TNF-α. Upon burn injury there was a significant increase in IL-10 mRNA, but not in IL-10 protein. For TNF-α, both mRNA and especially protein levels increased. 3
