46 Chapter 2 Conclusions This review indicated that the effects of exit from work, or more specific the effects of early/statutory retirement on health are different between high and low socioeconomic groups. Evidence suggests that exit from work has more positive effects on mental health and health behaviour among higher socioeconomic groups and more negative effects among lower socioeconomic groups. Public policies should focus on increasing the health status of lower socioeconomic groups as this could reduce health inequalities after exit from work.
