183 About the author ABOUT THE AUTHOR Henk-Jan Boersema was born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, on October 26th 1956. After completing high school at the Stedelijk Gymnasium in Leeuwarden in 1975, he studied at the University of Groningen and obtained his medical degree in 1985. He started working as an insurance physician for the BVG (a predecessor of the Dutch Institute for Employee Benefit Schemes (UWV)) in 1986. He specialized in insurance medicine and became a registered insurance physician in 1993. In the period 1997 to 2013 he was a member of the works council of Cadans (successor of the BVG and predecessor of the UWV) and UWV. From 2003 he worked as an insurance physician at the Objections and Appeals Department of UWV. With the positive experience of combining executive work as an insurance physician and other tasks, and interest in research that contributes to the profession, Henk-Jan applied for the position of junior researcher at the Dutch Research Center for Insurance Medicine (KCVG). KCVG is a collaboration between UWV, the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), The Academic Medical Center (AMC) and VU Medical Center in Amsterdam. He started his PhD research at the UMCG in November 2013. His research project on exploring the concept ‘Inability to Work Fulltime’ resulted in several international publications which form the basis of this thesis. He also published a number of national publications and performed many (inter)national presentations on the subject of his thesis. During his work as a junior researcher at the KCVG, he continued to work parttime in practice as an insurance physician at the Objections and Appeals Department of UWV. Additionally, in the last two years he also performed tasks of a senior researcher at the KCVG and UMCG. Henk-Jan retired from UWV in August 2023. A
