Chapter 5 108 Quality assessment We assessed the quality of reporting and analysis of the study designs with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), which allows for the appraisal of studies for literature reviews that include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies.[24] As most HCD studies apply a multi-method approach, we considered this tool fit for purpose. The MMAT contains two general screening questions and five study design specific criteria for assessing quantitative and qualitative studies. For mixed methods studies, we applied both sets of criteria, in addition to five specific mixed method criteria. Scores per item can vary between ‘Yes’ (criterion is met), ‘No’ (criterion is not met) and ‘Can’t tell’ (paper does not report appropriate information to rate this criterion). One author first performed the data retrieval and conducted the stepwise analysis described above. Subsequently, both authors reviewed and discussed the results.
