General discussion 285 findings do not support the hypothesis that changes in sleep after sex hormone changes are associated with changes in depressive symptoms. Researchers should further study sex differences and the mechanisms through which sex hormones influence mental well-being, and increasing awareness is needed for clinicians to address the possible role of sex hormones in their clinical practice. Within these practices, sex differences due to sex hormones should no longer be regarded as obstacles or burdens, but as instruments to be used to further clinical and scientific progress.
