Training in specific steps may reduce additional operative times, another important factor in surgical outcome. Moreover, tools that support operative workflow can use defined steps as a marking point to trigger specific events and logistics. Various options exist to define the specific steps and key components of procedures. Hierarchical task analysis (HTA) is a tool to deconstruct a technical action into steps or goals, substeps, operations and tasks. A simple example, making coffee, is shown in Figure 2.
